AEC Engineering is proud to play a key role in the construction of the new North Windham Wastewater Treatment Plant, a major infrastructure project designed to modernize wastewater treatment, protect groundwater, and support long‑term economic growth in Windham, Maine. Construction of the plant is being managed by MWH Constructors on behalf of owner Portland Water District.
In addition to various control panels, AEC Engineering was selected to supply the full suite of plant instrumentation. The instrumentation package includes advanced sensors, flow meters, level transmitters, control switches, gas detection equipment, pressure instrumentation, and process analyzers—totaling more than 70 individual devices critical to plant automation and process control.
The instrumentation scope includes:
- Flow Meters — Influent, effluent, RAS (Return Activated Sludge), sludge, chemical dosing, and process flow systems
- Level Instruments — Radar and pressure-based level transmitters and switches across tanks, wells, and containment areas
- Pressure Transmitters & Switches — Air, chemical systems, process lines, and pump discharge monitoring
- Gas Detection & Safety Sensors — H₂S probes, LEL sensors, and gas analyzers to protect, monitor, and ensure safe operating environments in hazardous areas
- Temperature and Utility Monitoring — Ambient and process temperature instruments
- Chemical Feed Monitoring — Flow and pressure devices for alum, caustic soda, citric acid, sodium hypochlorite, and Micro‑C systems
The new water treatment plant will utilize Membrane Bio‑Reactor (MBR) treatment technology and an innovative underground drip dispersal system—the first of its scale in Maine. This system will dramatically reduce nitrogen and phosphorus levels entering the local Sebago Lake / Little Sebago / Presumpscot watershed and boost long-term water quality. It is also expected to remove 25,000 pounds of pollutants each year that were previously discharged into the aquifer from area septic systems, while also enabling ongoing commercial expansion along the Route 302 corridor.
The North Windham Wastewater Treatment Plant represents a significant project for the area, helping to protect local waterways, support new businesses, and enable residential growth. AEC Engineering is proud to contribute to this effort by delivering the process instrumentation and controls necessary to operate this state‑of‑the‑art facility.
