In his blog post April 13, 2021, in the industry publication Control, control systems cybersecurity expert Joseph Weiss speculates on the plausibility that the container ship Ever Given suffered a cybersecurity breach, which ultimately caused them to run aground, blocking the Suez Canal and causing billions in supply chain disruption. Paranoia? Or another reminder to harden our industrial networks? It has been estimated that the blockage, which lasted more than six days, cost $400 million per hour. There are plenty of nefarious groups with the capabilities and motivation to make this happen. Mr. Weiss concludes that “Cyber threats provide the ultimate deniability in modern warfare.” Thankfully the US government has elevated cyber attacks of this nature to the same priority level as terrorism.
