Peter Heney, Editorial Director of Design World, used his “Insights” column of the June issue to share some unique information on the demographic trends that will impact China’s future as a manufacturing powerhouse. Some highlights were that China’s population is shrinking rapidly and will be at 50% of its current level by 2050; China doesn’t have the technical skills to operate the semiconductor plants of Taiwan and therefore will not invade; and if China did invade, it would suffer dire consequences if the US (or others) disrupt the oil deliveries from the Middle East that represent 80% of China’s energy supply. Mr. Heney learned this while attending the NFPA Annual Conference where famed geopolitical analyst Peter Ziehan was speaking.
